Symptoms of Autism
Autism can present itself in many areas of life to varying degrees. Each individual can have a unique presentation of symptoms often associated with communication, repetitive behaviors, and sensory sensitivities.
- Difficulty maintaining eye contact
- Struggles with nonverbal social cues, such as recognizing tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language
- Difficulty expressing and identifying emotions
- Repeats phrases or engages in repetitive movements like hand-flapping or rocking
- Uses an unusual tone when speaking
- Sensitive to light, textures, and sound
- Has intense, fixated interests
- Struggles to start or maintain a conversation
- Does not engage in “make-believe” play
- Experiences delayed fine or gross motor skills
- Strong preference for sameness and routine
Many additional symptoms can occur as well. Autism can be diagnosed at any age. Signs of ASD typically present themselves within the first year of life and become more prevalent by age two. Undiagnosed ASD can lead to unique challenges for individuals and their loved ones. Getting a diagnosis can bring peace of mind and equip the individual and loved one with strategies and support to foster success.
