Psychiatric Medication Management in West Michigan

For a lot of people, therapy is enough. For others, medication is what makes the difference between just getting through the day and actually living it.

There’s no shame in either path. At West Michigan Psychological Services (WMPS), our psychiatric nurse practitioners work right alongside your therapist to make sure your care is coordinated, evidence-based, and built around you. Not a one-size-fits-all prescription approach.

We’re here across the West Michigan Lakeshore in Holland, Grand Haven, and Muskegon. Whether you’re starting medication for the first time, adjusting something that isn’t working, or transitioning care from a previous provider, we’ll help you find what works.

What Is Psychiatric Medication Management?

Psychiatric medication management is ongoing supervised care from a licensed prescriber. At WMPS, those are our psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs). They evaluate your mental wellness, determine whether medication is appropriate, prescribe when it makes sense, and stay involved to monitor how you’re doing over time.

It’s not a one-time prescription and a wave goodbye. It’s an ongoing relationship that includes the following:
● An initial evaluation to understand your history, symptoms, and goals
● Medication recommendations grounded in current evidence (when appropriate)
● Regular follow-up appointments to assess how you’re responding
● Dosage adjustments as needed
● Coordination with your therapist if you’re receiving therapy at WMPS, or with outside providers if you’re not
● Real education about your medications so you actually understand what you’re taking and why

The goal isn’t to medicate away your problems. It’s to lower the barriers that make the other work harder, whether that’s therapy, relationships, parenting, work, or just getting
through your day.

Conditions We Treat with Medication Management

We provide psychiatric medication management for a wide range of mental wellness concerns:

Anxiety: Persistent worry, panic attacks, social anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder. When anxiety is taking over your life, medication can dial down the intensity enough to make real progress possible. We pair medication with evidence-based therapy approaches like CBT for coordinated, whole-person care.

Depression: When matched correctly and monitored carefully, antidepressants can make a real difference for moderate to severe depression. We don’t just prescribe and disappear. Ongoing follow-up is built in so we can make sure things are working and adjust when they’re not.

ADHD: Stimulant and non-stimulant ADHD medications are among the most researched and effective psychiatric medications out there. Whether you’re a newly diagnosed adult or a parent seeking medication support for a child after an evaluation, we provide careful, individualized prescribing.

Bipolar Disorder:
Bipolar disorder needs precise, ongoing management, often involving mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, or a combination thereof. This is where our integrated model really shines. When your prescriber and therapist are on the same team, your care actually moves in one direction.

OCD: OCD responds well to a combination of medication and therapy, particularly Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). We offer both, so you’re not stuck bouncing between separate providers trying to coordinate your own care.

Other Conditions: We also provide medication support for PTSD, postpartum depression and anxiety, sleep difficulties related to mental wellness conditions, and more. Not sure if medication management is right for your situation? Reach out and we’ll help you figure it out together.

Who Provides Medication Management at WMPS?

Medication management at WMPS is provided by licensed psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs). These are advanced practice nurses with specialized graduate training in psychiatric care, psychopharmacology, and mental wellness assessment.

PMHNPs are fully licensed to evaluate, diagnose, prescribe, and monitor psychiatric medications, operating within the same scope as psychiatrists for the conditions we treat.

What makes our model different is the team around them. At WMPS, your PMHNP isn’t working in a silo. They’re part of a multidisciplinary practice with licensed therapists, psychologists, and clinical social workers. That means your whole care team can actually collaborate, and your treatment plan reflects it.

The WMPS Integrated Care Model

Here’s a frustration we hear all the time: a therapist in one office, a prescriber somewhere else, a PCP in the middle, and nobody actually talking to each other. You end up being the one trying to coordinate everything.

That’s not how it works at WMPS.

When your therapist and prescriber are part of the same practice, coordination just happens. Your therapist notices something that might need a medication adjustment? They flag it. Your prescriber has clinical context that changes your therapy goals? They share it. Your care moves forward together because the people delivering it are on the same team.

This is especially valuable for: ● Clients managing complex or co-occurring conditions (ADHD + anxiety, depression + trauma, bipolar disorder + substance concerns) ● Children and adolescents, where school, family, and clinical factors all play into the picture ● Anyone who’s dealt with fragmented care before and is ready for something that actually feels connected

Do You Need a Referral or Prior Evaluation?

Nope. No referral needed to access medication management at WMPS. And if you’ve been evaluated by another provider, you don’t need to start from scratch either.

Our admin team will reach out to your previous healthcare provider to get any relevant records. You bring your history; we take it from there.

If you haven’t had a formal evaluation and you’re wondering whether one would help before starting medication, especially for ADHD or another condition that requires diagnostic clarity, we can handle that in-house too. WMPS offers comprehensive ADHD and autism evaluations and psychological assessments right here at our Lakeshore locations.

PMHNPs are advanced practice nurses with graduate-level specialization in psychiatric care and psychopharmacology. They’re licensed to evaluate, diagnose, prescribe, and monitor psychiatric medications, and they work as part of the broader WMPS clinical team.

Do I need a referral to see a prescriber at WMPS? No. You don’t need a referral. And if you’ve been evaluated by a previous provider, you don’t need to redo testing either. We’ll get your records directly.

Does WMPS accept insurance for medication management? Yes. We accept Aetna, Blue Cross, Blue Care Network, McLaren, Medicaid, Medicare, Meridian, Molina, Priority Health, and United Health Care. HSA cards are welcome too. Call 616-952-9957 or visit our Insurance & Policies page to verify your coverage.

Can I receive both therapy and medication management at WMPS? Yes, and honestly, that’s one of our biggest strengths. When therapy and medication management happen under the same roof, your providers can actually coordinate your care. That leads to better outcomes than managing two separate practices on your own.

What conditions does WMPS prescribe for? We provide medication management for anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, postpartum depression and anxiety, and other psychiatric conditions. Reach out if you have questions about a specific diagnosis.

Do I have to be in therapy to receive medication management at WMPS? No. Medication management is available as a standalone service. That said, your PMHNP will talk through what combination of services might serve you best during your initial evaluation.

Is virtual medication management available? Yes. We offer telehealth medication management for Michigan residents in addition to in-person visits at our Holland, Grand Haven, and Muskegon locations. Same clinical standards, more flexibility.

How often will I need follow-up appointments? It depends on where you are in treatment. Clients starting a new medication typically check in more frequently at first. Once things stabilize, appointments usually shift to every one to three months. Your PMHNP will set a schedule based on what you actually need.
